When certain postings on job boards never go away – lingering for weeks or months – it might lead you to think that the employers who post them simply can’t find anyone to fill the position—that those gigs are unpopular, unwanted. However, the truth of the matter is that the companies that post ads for those jobs find those positions so important that they never stop fielding applications and hiring talented candidates to fill them. The job postings never come down because the need for new bodies never goes away. That’s the working hypothesis, anyway, of end-to-end talent acquisition platform SmartRecruiters—a San Francisco-based firm that processed 1.5 million jobs in the past year and handles recruiting responsibilities for some 700 customers like Equinox Fitness, Marc Jacobs and Ubisoft.
Healthcare positions take the top spots in SmartRecruiters’ list of job positions that remain open the longest on its platform. The job of Behavioral Therapist is advertised an average of 310 days before having its posting removed. The position of Caregiver is advertised for an average of 256 days and ads for Medical Assistants linger for 220 days.
In the tech sphere, employers are constantly scanning for talent in development or IT. Tech Support ads remain on SmartRecruiters’ platform for 182 days, on average, and Software Developer postings do so for 247 days. Other in demand positions are Business Development Manager (176 days), Accounts Receivable Manager (171 days) and Intern (180 days).
Grabbing as much talent on the open market as possible is part of a new strategy of hiring that Ternynck and SmartRecruiters have noticed from employers as of late; one that includes spending marketing dollars to attract candidates. “Hiring is less and less about people filling out a job application form and being tracked as applicants and (being told) ‘we’ll let you know if you’ve been accepted,’” he explained. “That’s the old way of hiring. The new way of hiring is that organizations realize that people are, in fact, the only long term differentiator between businesses. They start to market to the talent in ways that are closer to the way they market to their customers. This is what people have referred to as the ‘Talent Economy.’”
SmartRecruiters also tracks positions whose postings remain on its platform the shortest amount of time. Those, says Ternynck, tend to be jobs that do not require specific, hard-to-find skills and include listings like Inside Sales Manager (lists for an average of 25 days), Executive Administrative Assistance (20 days) or Sales Representative (14 days). Such positions require only general types of skills and bodies to fill them can be snapped up quickly as needed.
Here are ten job positions employers constantly want to fill, information compiled by SmartRecruiters:
1. Behavioral Therapists
2. Caregiver
3. Software Developer
4. Medical Assistant
5. Office Assistant
