New jobs coming! Another Spanish hotel to set up business in Jamaica.

New jobs will be coming  to Jamaica's tourism industry very soon! Princess Hotels and Resorts will be building its new resort by next summer (2020).

The Spanish hotel chain has holdings in its home market, the Canary Islands, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic and is looking to expand to Jamaica and Costa Rica, said Rafael Millan, the company's Caribbean representative.

Princess’ Jamaican resort is slated to be built on 186 acres at Green Island in Hanover. The seller was a private owner who was identified only as a Jamaican-Canadian.

“We are currently working on the master plan,” said Millan. “We are doing 2,000 rooms in two phases – one phase of 1,000 and another phase of 1,000.”

June 2020, he said, is the date being considered for groundbreaking.

Princess Hotels was founded in 1967. Millan said the number of rooms being operated in the Caribbean amounts to 5,000.

He said the company’s total investment in the Jamaican resort would range between US$150 million and US$500 million.

Lauding the Jamaican brand he said:

Jamaica “is extremely interesting for the type of products we manage. It is a very solid brand, internationally well known. Historically, Jamaica is one of the first international brands in the market. Jamaica is where all-inclusive started in the ’70s after the oil crisis.”

Millan also noted that, “The brand has been there for many years. Everyone respects and likes it. You say ‘Jamaica’ to everyone in the world, and normally, what you get back is a smile.”

Workshops for Entrepreneurs held in Kingston yesterday. (Jamaica 2018)

Edited March 27, 2018.

The founder and chairman of New Fortress Energy (NFE), Wes Edens, partnered with the Jonathan M. Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship at Brown University and the Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) to host two (2) entrepreneurship workshops yesterday (March 26, 2018). Mr. Edens' company has poured significant investment into helping Jamaica smoothly transition into the natural gas industry. He revealed that the workshops are part of his commitment to support economic development and job creation in Jamaica.

These workshops were held at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, at 9:30 am, and at 3:00 pm at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel. They were led by Danny Warshay, award winning educator, successful entrepreneur, and executive director of the Jonathan M. Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship at Brown University.

A press release from the organisers said that Warshay would assist workshop participants to develop entrepreneurial confidence, learn how to master and apply the structured entrepreneurial process, use bottom-up research to find and validate unmet needs as well as build their entrepreneurial networks. Warshay also discussed the critical importance of observing and listening anthropologically and empathetically in the entrepreneurial process.

"Wherever I teach throughout the world, entrepreneurship is a key driver to economic development, and so teaching entrepreneurship is an essential catalyst for economic growth. I am excited to be leading these workshops in Jamaica, thanks to Wes Edens and the New Fortress Energy, as well as the University of the West Indies. Based on the successes of these kinds of workshops elsewhere, I am confident that participants will find value in them and that these efforts will create even more opportunities for entrepreneurs in Jamaica," Mr. Warshay said.

Earlier, speaking about the motivation behind the workshops, Jake Suski, managing director for public affairs at New Fortress Energy, commended Jamaicans for their entrepreneurial spirit:

"Jamaicans have a natural tendency toward entrepreneurship, evidenced by the many innovative businesses that make significant contributions to the economy. We want to help encourage and foster even more entrepreneurship in Jamaica and support growth alongside organisation like the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC), Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ), First Angels, Branson Centre, and the universities who are already doing valuable work in this space."

Additionally, he reiterated the company and its founder's commitment to supporting entrepreneurship in Jamaica:

"Investment in sustainable growth of Jamaica by supporting entrepreneurship and education is central to the vision of our founder, Wes Edens, and we look forward to building meaningful partnerships and investing in programmes that will have a lasting impact," he said.

As part of its long-term investment in Jamaica's energy landscape, New Fortress Energy undertook several iniatives last year (2017), including breaking ground at Jamalco for the new gas-fired heat and power plant, which is estimated to create over 500 jobs.  In addition, as part of an overall partnership with the UWI, New Fortress Energy is funding 10 scholarships for UWI Mona students with clear need for financial assistance to pay for their tuition, and providing guest lecturers to the School Engineering for enhanced curriculum around natural gas, cryogenics and energy projects. The workshops are being hosted in association with the JBDC, DBJ and First Angels Jamaica.

Hard Rock Cafe opens new restaurant in Montego Bay!

The newly opened restaurant's motto is 'Love All, Serve All' coined with the Jamaican motto in mind 'Out of Many, One People', stated Dixon, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the establishment.
According to the COO, Hard Rock respects the culture of its partners and looks for things that would cause people to gravitate towards the brand.

Located at the former Seawind Beach Club, Hard Rock offers its collectors fashion, music-related merchandise, live performances, and great food.
Dixon describes Jamaica as having the right synergy and reputation for great live music. "Having a Hard Rock Cafe in Montego Bay is the right choice at the right time," he noted in an interview earlier this year.
Ground was broken for the cafe towards the end of July last year.
Outside of the entertainment that the new Jamaican attraction has added to the island's offerings, the opening comes at a time when the Ministry of Tourism is placing a lot of attention on gastronomy.
Hard Rock concretises the five pillars of growth being touted by Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett.
"It is the new products and networks, which encompasses entertainment, sports and culture that forms that critical group, which is going to underpin the growth of five million visitors by 2021," says Bartlett.
With probably the largest variety of menu items in the country with a generous assortment of appetisers, salads, USDA Angus beef hamburgers, sandwiches, entrees featuring USDA steaks, oxtail, curry shrimp, smokehouse sandwiches and ribs, desserts, specialty coffee drinks, signature Hard Rock drinks, wine, beer, non-alcoholic drinks and a kids menu, the gastronomic offerings outside of the hotels just got better.
"My favorite food items are Twisted Mac n Cheese, the Smokehouse ribs and the Oreo cookie cheesecake," said Dixon, even while he showed off the guitar deck close to the beach, which is already his favourite space on the property because of the serenity of the location and the view.

The restaurant has the ability to seat up to 420 persons between interior dining, the event room, patio, exterior deck and cabanas, which makes it one of the largest free standing restaurants in Jamaica as well.
"We plan to have a weekly live band and deejays on select nights, with additional items coming, such as Sunday brunch and a Sunday beach party," revealed Dixon.
