Draughtsman (Kingston, Jamaica) - Jamaica Public Service (JPS)

The incumbent is responsible for establishing, updating, maintaining and carrying out analyses relevant to the functions of the GIS department.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The incumbent is responsible for establishing, updating, maintaining and carrying out analyses relevant to the functions of the GIS department. This includes ensuring the quality, accuracy and timeliness of GIS databases and system are updated and deployed to users. The incumbent is also responsible for directly supporting special projects such as asset mapping and customer to feeder/transformer mapping in meeting the company’s objectives.

Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for creating, updating, maintaining drawings and carrying out functions relevant to the Drawing Office. This includes executing Electrical Distribution, Substation, Transmission, Power Stations and System Protection Design Drawings to support engineers. The incumbent is also responsible for using GIS tools, such as GPS and GIS software to meet the Drawing Office and Engineers Drawing requirements.

EDUCATION, SPECIALIZED TECHNIQUES & EXPERIENCE
  • A Diploma in the field of geography, computer science, engineering, surveying, planning or in related GIS field.
  • At least one (1) year experience in GIS mapping and application.
  • Good Interpersonal Skills
  • Sound judgment, analytical, decision making and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of integrated GIS/GPS, principles, systems and technologies.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant GIS software/products such as ArcView, Arc Edit, Arc Info and Geo-databases.
  • Sound knowledge of Auto CAD Software.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Competence in data analysis and interpretation.

ELEMENTS OF MAJOR DUTIES
  • Performs technical duties in the maintenance, development and operation of geographic information systems.
  • Creates, maintainS and editS departmental spatial databases, including the preparation of data dictionaries and documentation.
  • Prepares and execute queries of individual electronic databases and thematic maps, producing products that include, but are not limited to maps, tables, plots, charts and graphs.
  • Using GIS and other technologies, prepares a variety of analyses of electronic information, including the preparation of multi-layered and linked thematic maps and tabular data.
  • Prepares graphic materials showing the results of these analyses; and assist staff in interpreting the results.
  • Ensures the quality and accuracy of a variety of geographic information system data, including researching and revising maps and data from other data systems.
  • Operates a variety of geographic information system input and output devices, including GPS instruments, digitizing boards, scanners, printers and plotters.
  • Conducts field audits to verify and validate JPS distribution feeder assets and related attributes.
  • Creates, edit and maintain Electrical Distribution, Substation, Transmission, Power Stations and System Protection Design Drawings using Auto CAD Software.
  • Uses GPS coordinates of JPS Co Electrical features and land base features to create geo-referenced Electrical Distribution Designs using GIS Software and Auto CAD software.

Administrative Assistant (Kingston, Jamaica) - Jamaica Public Service (JPS)

This position is responsible for the secretarial and general office work; coordinating, tracking, and monitoring of projects and budget expenditure on a timely basis, to ensure smooth operation of the Division.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the secretarial and general office work; assisting the Manager/Department Head and other executives in the Division with administrative duties; as well as coordinating, tracking, and monitoring of projects and budget expenditure on a timely basis, to ensure smooth operation of the Division.

ELEMENTS OF MAJOR DUTIES

  • Assists in the preparation and review of the Manager’s and Cost Center Manager’s budget and highlight variances.
  • Coordinates travel arrangements and schedules appointments for Executive Personnel.
  • Assists the General Office with Oracle functions and payroll data to Unix System.
  • Organizes Department/Divisional and Monthly meetings.
  • Files and retrieves project records and other correspondence.
  • Assists the Manager in project management, ensuring that objectives are met within the time specified.
  • Initiates research and obtain information, which will increase productivity and achieve the goals of the Division.
  • Learns and applies new skills and knowledge for job enrichment and training.

EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED TECHNIQUES
  • Tertiary diploma in Business Administration or CPS.
  • Excellent human relations, time management, communication and report writing skills.
  • Sound administrative and organizational skills.
EXPERIENCE/LEARNED DISCIPLINE
  • A minimum of three (3) years in a similar position.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office Software (Excel and word).
  • Knowledge of HR systems, Oracle Financials and Banner CIS.
  • Project Management experience would be an asset

Role: Engineering Internship Programme 2023/2024

Summary:

The mandate of the Engineering Internship Programme is to provide our interns with practical learning and professional development opportunities, while having a first hand experience of the Engineering functions of the Jamaica Public Service Company. This is a one-year full-time internship programme from September 2023 to August 2024. 

Interns will be paid during the period of engagement.

  • Must be an Electrical Engineering Major
  • Must be in the final year of the programme - graduate 2023
  • Outstanding academic performance - minimum 3.0
  • GPA should clearly be stated on the resume
  • Title of Final Year Project must be stated on the resume, with a brief summary
  • Interns will be rotated across the Engineering departments in the business
  • Success completion of the programme may result in placement in the organization if suitable vacancies exist
  • Applicants should have attended any of the major universities in Jamaica
