Receptionist/Secretary 

Job Summary

The position of Receptionist/Secretary exists to manage the daily operations of the front desk and to assist students, staff and visitors effectively as the need arises. The incumbent plays a ritual role in projecting the appropriate image of the school to the public. Being the first line of contact with callers and visitors, he/she is required to give accurate and current information by telephone or personal contact; direct and control the flow of students and visitors to their destinations. The incumbent performs other duties which includes:  providing assistance to the Behavioural Science and General Management Unit, promoting the courses for MSBM programmes, providing administrative support for the unit and collecting relevant documents and mail.

Qualifications: Education & Experience:

  • A BSc in Business Administration
  • Chartered Professional Seretary (CPS) or
  • Chartered Administrative Professional Certification (CAP) is a plus
  • At least two (2) years experience in a similar position

Key Responsibilities:
  • Knowledge of the procedures and policies of the University of the West Indies
  • Knowledge of programmes being offered by MSBM
  • Knowledge of the undergraduate and graduate hand books for the Faculty of Social Sciences in order to better advise students on queries
  • Knowledge of office procedures
  • Knowledge of Norstar PBX telephone system
Required competencies:
  • Competence in Microsoft Office Suite applications, Banner, SharePoint, Point of Sale machine and OurVLE
  • Customer service skills
  • Excellent keyboard skills with the ability to type 40 words or more per minute accurately
  • Notable mastery of the English vernacular
  • Ability to communicate with persons at all levels
  • Ability to understand both oral and written directives
  • Good time management skills, with the capability of meeting deadlines
  • Good initiative with the ability to work with little supervision
  • Good problem solving abilities
  • Possess the ability to multitask
  • Possess the ability to work under pressure
  • Must be a team player

We invite suitably qualified applicants to fill position of Administrative Officer (Analyst, Pension, Commercial, Operations and Special Assignments). Office of Finance, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Regional Headquarters.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the senior Financial Management, Pensions, Commercial Operations and Special Assignments, the successful candidate is expected to provide policy driven assistance and carry out functions to support the following:

  • Pension Administration for the Administrative, Technical and Service staff (ATS) Pension plan for The UWI. Federated Superannuation System for Universities (FSSU) Pension Scheme for The UWI;
  • Commercial Operations activities and properties of The UWI Centre; and
  • Special Assignment as assigned.
  • MSc in Actuarial Science or Economics or Business Administration or related areas.
  • Qualification in pension management and property management.
  • At least five years' work experience in a related field with proven experience.

Competencies And Skills:
  • Candidate with a proven record of practical experience in pension funds, corporate finance, investment management , excel programming/modeling and management consultancy would be desirable.
  • Accounting experience  would be an asset.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of using an enterprise system such as PeopleSoft and Banner Finance.
  • Working knowledge of Access will be considered favourable.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills, sound judgement and high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent leadership and inter-personal skills and command of both written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to meet close deadlines.
  • Positive attitude, enthusiastic and should have a high level of concentration and ability to readily identify issues and rectify the same.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with different levels of team members.

Legal Officer (Kingston, JM) - University of the West Indies

Legal Officer


in the Legal Unit, Vice Chancellor, the University of the West Indies, Regional Headquarters (UWI-RHQ).

The Legal Unit is headed by a General Counsel. Specific areas of practice include higher education employment, intellectual property, contract, corporate, administrative, industrial relations, civil litigation, and other areas as required. 

Reporting to the University General Counsel, the incumbent will:
  • Handle general legal issues
  • Furnish a level of professional legal service
  • Conduct legal research
  • Advise University Counsel and UWI officials on law  and policy
  • Interact with members of the legal profession,  officials of the state and others as required to perform his or her duties and responsibilities
  • Assist in drafting, amending and interpreting legislative documents
  • From time to time, provide advice on student/staff disciplinary matters
The incumbent is expected to operate with great alacrity and skill having regard to the objects of the University as a regional institution.

Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor's of Law or equivalent from an accredited university
  • Admitted to practice in Jamaica and is in good standing
  • Have a minimum of five (5) years experience in general corporate practice and civil litigation
  • Strong academic credentials and excellent analytical, research, writing, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a law firm, government agency; experience in higher education law and exposure to intellectual property and industrial relations are assets
Personal Attributes/Skills:
  • Must be a team player and possess excellent communication skills
  • Must be able to respond to numerous priorities and interactions with many strong personalities
  • Must be able to function in a high stress environment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications; able to learn and use institutional software systems

Research Assistant (Kingston, Jamaica) - Univ. of the West Indies


Applications are invited from suitably  qualified persons to fill the position of Research Assistant, University of the West Indies, Vice Chancellery. The Centre for Reparation Research is seeking to hire a Research Assistant for the period August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021.

The Research Assistant should have a solid knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel, and database management, as he/she will also conduct literature reviews or field research including running focus groups.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A Master's degree in History with specialization in Caribbean History;
  • Excellent research, analytical and proposal writing skills;
  • An aptitude for research, dissemination and advocacy including via various media;
  • A knowledge of critical issues in human rights and global movement for reparatory justice;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent time management skills; and 
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
The successful candidate should also have a good work ethic, the ability to work on his/her own and a willingness to maintain confidentiality and to travel in the course of his/her own duties.
